Final Film Opening

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

During my research of other Thriller films I looked at the different titles for inspiration and to get an idea of what kind of fonts traditional thriller films usually use.

The two thrillers I looked at were seven and ‘to kill a mocking bird. As seen in the film opening of seven, the titles look like they may have been hand written. Where as the titles from ‘To kill a mocking bird’ look like they have been typed on a type writer.

These Thrillers both used very different titles but they shared the way in which they are both based on monochrome colours which I liked. This is why I decided to incorporate this into my titles by making mine black which means my media product would contain the conventions of a real media product.

In most other Thriller’s I found that they all followed similar conventions in the way that the mail role was a Male of a mature age. I decided to challenge this typical convention but making the main character a female as I felt this would make my media product different from others of a similar nature.

How did you attract/address your audience?

When thinking of ways to attract my target audience, I first went back and analysed my Target Audience Survey and Interview. It was clear to me that the typical convention and audience expectations of a Thriller film, was to contain many outdoor location similar too the thriller ‘Taken’ which is set in various different locations which are mainly outside.

I managed to incorporate this typical convention into my film opening by filming the majority of my film opening outdoors mostly in woods, However I did film the flashbacks indoors as I felt a change of location would make my film opening more interesting and less stereotypical, plus it gave the film another dynamic.

I also decided to contradict the usual stereo typical convention of the main character usually being male (which I again, concluded from my target audience research) and also the film ‘Shutter Island’ as the main character is both male and of a mature age. I felt making a change rather than following the typical conventions of a thriller would make my film opening different and unpredictable which is why more people would be attracted to it, as it is different from other psychological thrillers. This is why I decided to cast my main character as a young Female.

I used a young character as my target audience was 15 and above so I felt having a young character would mean the audience could relate to her better.

I also concluded from my Target Audience Survey that many costumes in Thriller’s were expected to contain dark colours. I decided to incorporate this typical convention in to my film opening but also change it in some way by making ‘Ellysia’ who plays the main character wear dark trousers but also some normal everyday clothing like her jacket, so it wasn’t obvious to the audience who the victim was at the very start as she does not stand out as they all would be wearing similar  clothing.

I also concluded that many Thriller films use dark lighting rather than bright lighting to add to the eerie and creepy atmosphere which is why I decided to film on days where the weather was a little bit darker than usual as well as changing the exposure and IOS.
